Irish Yew (Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata')
Our Yew Topiary Balls are tightly clipped evergreen features designed to add structure, symmetry and year-round interest to garden spaces. With their dense rounded form, they are ideal for containers, borders, pathways and formal planting schemes.
Taxus baccata, also known as English Yew, is a classic UK native evergreen widely used in hedging and topiary. Its fine dark green foliage and naturally compact growth habit make it ideal for precise shaping and long-lasting structure.
Key Features
- Form: Pre-clipped topiary ball
- Foliage: Dense evergreen needles
- Growth Habit: Slow-growing and highly shapeable
- Position: Full sun, partial shade or shade
- Best For: Containers, entrances and formal garden design
This topiary ball works particularly well when used in pairs to frame entrances, along pathways or within symmetrical planting schemes. It also pairs well with other shapes such as cones, cubes and standard forms for a more structured design.
Yew is extremely tolerant of pruning and responds well to trimming once or twice a year to maintain a neat, compact shape. Its slow growth makes it easy to manage while ensuring long-term structure and definition.
Suitable for most soil types except waterlogged conditions, Yew performs well in both sunny and shaded positions. Using a quality planting compost will help support strong establishment in the early years.
They should be planted with general purpose planting compost to give them the best start after planting. See our accessories page for additional products to give these plants the very best chance of successful establishment.
