Thuja Hedging 6-6.5ft (180-200cm) Rootballed
Planting a Thuja hedge using root balled plants is the economic option to planting a large Thuja hedge without costing a fortune. These plants have been properly root balled in the field meaning that their roots are well contained in plenty of soil with hessian wrapped around them. Being root balled rather than container grown, these plants represent good value for money but should only be planted in the colder months of the year and watered properly in their first year after planting. These plants are all sold as 6-6.5ft (180-200cm) in height.
Thuya creates a fine formal hedge and its olive green foliage, when crushed, gives off a pleasant aromatic scent. It is favoured by many people as a good alternative to leylandii.
Thuya are a relatively fast growing evergreen (not as fast as leylandii) and these plants will put on 1-1.5ft (30-45cm) each year if left untrimmed and so it will not take long for these plants to produce a thick Thuja hedge at the required height.
Once the plants have reached their desired height, we recommend that it be trimmed at that height which will both encourage side growth and restrict upward growth to a manageable amount. A Thuja hedge needs to be trimmed annually in the spring or autumn.
Any Thuja hedge plants should be planted 2ft (60cm) apart (as shown in the photograph) and if they are planted during the drier summer months, they must be properly watered in their first year to ensure that they establish properly. This is best done using leaky hose which is cheap, easy to install and very effective.
