Carpinus betulus is a native British hedging plant renowned for its dense growth habit, attractive serrated green leaves and year-round screening qualities. While deciduous, Hornbeam often retains its coppery-brown leaves throughout winter, providing additional privacy and seasonal interest.

For best results, plant approximately 45-60cm apart when forming a hedge and water regularly during the first growing season to encourage strong root establishment. Once established, Hornbeam is hardy, low maintenance and highly reliable.

Hornbeam trees are well suited to heavier soils but if you are planting during the drier months of the year, it is important to water them properly during their first year after planting.
