Striking Purple Foliage

Copper Beech is essentially a purple-leaved version of Common Green Beech. Its Latin name is Fagus sylvatica purpurea, and unlike Common Beech, its leaves emerge in attractive shades of purple.

The foliage turns a beautiful golden-copper brown in autumn and, like Common Beech, the dead leaves remain on the hedge throughout winter. They are only pushed off when new growth appears the following spring.

This means a Copper Beech hedge can provide an added level of visual privacy throughout the year, while also bringing distinctive seasonal colour to your garden.

Create a Mixed Beech Hedge

Copper Beech can be used on its own to create a striking purple-leaved hedge, but it can also be used alongside Common Green Beech.

Some customers choose to plant the occasional Copper Beech plant randomly within a green Beech hedge. This creates an attractive contrast and adds a striking element to an otherwise uniform hedge.

Planting & Spacing

These plants are supplied bare root, meaning they are dug directly from the field and sold without soil around their roots. They should be planted as soon as possible after purchase to prevent the roots from drying out.

For the best results:

• Single row: Plant 45cm apart.
• Double row: Plant 60cm apart.
• Root development: Copper Beech responds well to Rootgrow, which helps the plants produce a secondary root system.
• Protection: If deer and rabbits are prolific in your planting area, use spiral tree guards to protect the young plants.

Growth & Maintenance

Copper Beech will put on approximately 30-45cm (1-1.5ft) of growth each year after planting.

Once the hedge reaches your desired height, it should be trimmed to encourage the plants to thicken out and form a denser barrier.
