These tall copper beech trees are ideal for creating a relatively instant hedge without costing the earth. These plants are the taller and more effective way to plant a copper beech hedge than using bare root plants. They are all 210-240cm (7-8ft) tall and come rootballed, that is to say that they are dug straight from the field and are sold with a ball of soil around their roots wrapped up in hessian sacking.  They should be planted as soon as possible after purchasing and should be planted in their hessian sacking which will quickly rot away and new root growth can easily push through.

Copper Beech is a purple version of Common (Green) Beech and its Latin name is Fagus sylvatica purpurea. Instead of its leaves being green like normal beech, its leaves come out in purple shades that can look very attractive. Like normal beech, copper beech leaves will turn a golden-copper brown colour in the autumn and will remain on the tree all winter and they will only be pushed off by new growth the following spring. This helps a beech hedge to give an added level of visual privacy all year round.

Some people enjoy planting the occasional random copper beech hedge plants within a green beech hedge to add a striking element to the hedge.

Beech hedging is a very traditional form of hedging and is native to the UK. The first green leaves of the year are synonymous with the arrival of spring and the leaves will remain green until the autumn when they will turn a golden-copper brown colour. Beech, unlike many of its deciduous competitors, will retain its dead leaves on the hedge for most of the winter and they will only be pushed off by new growth the following spring. This helps a beech hedge to give an added level of visual privacy all year round.

These plants will put on around 1-1.5ft (30-45cm) of growth a year after planting and should be trimmed at their desired height when it is reached. Being relatively tall, these plants will come close to achieving immediate eye level privacy, especially if planted in a double row.

These tall beech trees should be planted 45cm apart in a single row or 60cm apart in a double row but they will fill out so quickly that you won't really need to plant a double row.

More information on beech trees and beech hedges can be found on the beech hedging category page.
