Blackthorn provides interest throughout the year. Its white flowers appear in spring, followed by abundant sloes in autumn. The sloes are popular for gin-making, while the dense growth provides valuable shelter for nesting birds and other wildlife.

For the greatest wildlife benefit, Blackthorn works particularly well as part of a mixed-species native hedge.

Planting & Care

Bare-root Blackthorn is dug directly from our production fields when the plants are dormant and the temperatures are suitable. Once lifted, bare-root plants should be planted quickly to help prevent root damage.

For the best results:

• Spacing: Plant 45cm apart in a single row, or 60cm apart in a double row to create a thicker hedge.
• Soil: Blackthorn is suitable for most soil types.
• Protection: Use Rootgrow to promote strong root development. Spiral tree guards can also be used where deer or rabbits are present.
• Companion Planting: Blackthorn grows well alongside other native species, including Hawthorn, Field Maple and Dog Rose.

Seasonal Availability

This is a seasonal product that can only be dug from our production fields once the plants have gone dormant and temperatures are suitable. We expect to start digging these plants from the end of October 2026.
