Pre-order information

This is a seasonal product that can only be dug from our production fields when the tree/plant has gone dormant and the temperatures are correct. We are expecting to be able to start digging these plants from the end of October 2026.

Our Portuguese Laurel at 3.5-4ft (100-120cm) is supplied rootballed and ready to establish quickly, making it an excellent choice for creating a reliable evergreen hedge. These well-grown plants provide strong structure, healthy growth and year-round screening from planting.

Prunus lusitanica is a refined evergreen hedging plant known for its glossy dark green foliage and distinctive red stems. It offers a more elegant alternative to traditional laurel, making it suitable for both formal and contemporary garden designs.

Key Features

  • Plant Height: 100-120cm (3.5-4ft)
  • Supply Type: Rootballed
  • Growth Habit: Dense, upright and compact
  • Foliage: Glossy evergreen leaves with red stems
  • Position: Full sun or partial shade
  • Best For: Privacy hedging, screening and boundary planting

This size is ideal for starting a structured hedge with a manageable initial height while still delivering strong long-term coverage. It works well for garden boundaries, driveways and evergreen screening projects where reliable year-round privacy is required.

For best results, plant approximately 60cm apart when forming a hedge and water regularly during the first growing season to support establishment. Once established, it is hardy, low maintenance and highly reliable.

It can be grown as a small hedge of 3-4ft (90-120cm) in height but will be equally happy if grown as a taller hedge of 6-7ft (180-210cm) to give that all important eye level privacy.

A Portuguese Laurel hedge will need to be trimmed annually in the spring or autumn. We recommend trimming in the spring before a new flush of growth.

Many people choose Portuguese Laurel as alternative to Yew, Leylandii or Laurel as it is faster growing than Yew (and still looks formal) but not as fast growing as Leylandii or Laurel.
