Pre-order information

This is a seasonal product that can only be dug from our production fields when the tree/plant has gone dormant and the temperatures are correct. We are expecting this item to be available from mid October 2025.

Please note: These hornbeam plants are sold in bundles of 10 and must be added to the shopping cart in multiples of 10.

Planting a bare root hornbeam hedge is a cost-effective way to create a classic and beautiful boundary. These plants are 100-120cm (3-4ft) tall and come bare rooted — dug straight from the field with no soil around their roots. To ensure successful establishment, bare root plants should be planted as soon as possible after purchase to avoid drying out.

About Hornbeam:

Hornbeam is a native UK hedging species with traditional appeal. Its rounded, serrated green leaves signal the arrival of spring, and unlike many deciduous hedges, hornbeam retains its golden-copper brown dead leaves throughout most of winter, only shedding them as new growth emerges in spring. This characteristic provides enhanced year-round screening and privacy.

Growth & Care:

  • Expect growth of approximately 1–1.5ft (30–45cm) per year

  • Trim annually once desired height is achieved

Planting Guidance:

  • Single row: 45cm spacing

  • Double row: 60cm spacing for quicker density

When planting bare root hornbeam, we recommend using Rootgrow which helps the plants produce a secondary system of roots. It is also important if deer and rabbits are prolific in your planting area to use spiral tree guards to protect them.
