Greg Stafford MP Visits CGJ Mathias & Son Nurseries

On Tuesday 20th August, we were delighted to host our new MP, Greg Stafford who was recently elected as the first MP for the newly created Farnham and Bordon constituency.

Having spotted our sponsorship of various local events, including the Tilford Village Fete, the Tilford Charity 10km fundraiser and Weyfest, Greg was keen to engage with a local business that is highly supportive of the local community and so a visit was organised for him to come and see our work first hand.

What the Visit Entailed

Greg was toured around all of our nursery sites in Tilford by Bob, Tom and Will Mathias and showed a great interest in listening to the concerns of our third generation family business.

He was delighted to see our expansive nursery production where hedging plants and trees are grown in our fields and prepared ready for sale and shipped to our customers nationwide.

Greg was particularly interested and pleased to see that we had recently taken on two new school leavers who were keen to learn new skills and gain an understanding of commercial horticulture by working on one of the largest hedging nurseries in the country.  Nursery work involves skills that are not readily taught and are being lost in day to day life as people move away from an understanding of nature and trees.  Our staff are trained to use our cutting edge machinery and hone new skills in how to successfully grow and manage trees and plants to ensure we produce the highest quality crops. We were thrilled that our local MP showed such an interest in us as a business and was willing to lend his ear to listen to our concerns about the industry and the wider rural economy.  All too often, it is easy to feel ignored by politicians so it was a refreshing change to have Greg visit us and appreciate the great benefit that our business brings to the local economy and community.
